May 8,2012

We are getting down to the wire now with the end of the school year approaching. I am reminding the students that homework needs to be completed and test information needs to be studied. Sixth graders have a tendency to drift off this time of the year and I don’t want any surprises when the final report card is sent home. Please continue to encourage your child to keep up with their assignments. I do appreciate your help!

This week we begin our study of the continent of Africa from the 1200′s to the 1400′s. It is a very interesting chapter with so much important information. We will have a quiz later in the week on the first two lessons.

In Religion, we continue with Family Life as well as our Gospel readings. This week we focus on good communication with our families and truth and love.If time permits, we will begin learning about physical and emotional changes that will be a part of their adolescent life.

We continue with Spirit Week. Don’t forget that Friday is our final Mathletics competition and celebration in the parking lot. It should be fun!

Have a great week.

April 30, 2012

Congrats to all of the fifth and sixth graders for their energy and enthusiasm for the Mathletics competition. I hope that it will be a great success for the school!

This week in Social Studies, we wrap up Chapter 12 and our study of Europe. The students will have the vocabulary portion of the test on Wednesday and the usual chapter test on Thursday. We began our review today. Next week, we will study Africa and the empires of West Africa. Last week, the students had fun with our,”Pick a Penny,” project. They were amazed at all the fun facts and historical information that they uncovered while using the IPADS. It was a fun project!

In Religion, the fifth grade will be participating in our end of the year program, Family Life. Mrs. Hughes will cover the science portion in her classes and I will cover the moral values and Christian aspects of the program. I am hoping that the students will also be able to discuss any of the information at home with mom and dad. Please ask your child to share with you.

This Friday is a half day of school due to the May Crowning. It is a beautiful and holy tradition for our students. Dismissal will be 11:45 a.m.

Have a great week!

April 17, 2012

Soon it will be May and the flowers will be everywhere. That, of course, means that we are nearing the end of the school year. I hope that we can continue to stay focused and be prepared each day like we were in September.

In Religion, we are learning about God’s endless love for us. We are also learning about our own character traits, both positive and negative, and how we can improve ourselves.

In Social Studies, we continue with the Middle Ages, the Magna Carta and knights and serfs. We also will be learning about the Roman church during these times and the Crusades. The students will have a quiz on Tuesday covering lessons 1 and 2.

Have a nice week!

March 27, 2012

It is hard to believe that we are at the end of March and spring is really here. One of the students counted and we have less that 40 days of school. Some of them are anxious I guess. We still have much to accomplish in the weeks ahead.

We are wrapping up our Social Studies chapter on the Mayan civilization. There will be a test this Friday. After Easter, we will begin studying the cultures of Medieval Europe. We will learn about the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Reformation and the division of the Roman Church.

The fifth graders have done remarkably well in their studies on Lent and the Easter season. I believe that they have a good understanding of this holiest of times. I have encouraged them to participate in Holy Thursday services, as well as Good Friday stations. We will finish Jesus of Nazareth by Monday or Tuesday. After Easter we will start with Chapter 13, God’s Love is Endless.”

Thursday is the long awaited Springfield trip for the fifth graders. They will have a great time. Sixth grade will venture to Argonne labs for a very enlightening day. It will be fun!

Have a wonderful Easter with your families!

March 21,2012

Spring is here and I guess the groundhog was wrong. The fans are spinning in the classrooms and the breezes feel wonderful. Good-bye to winter, hopefully.

This Thursday in Religion, the students will have a test on Holy Week. They have their vocabulary words and should not have a problem if they study. We are still watching portions of the Jesus of Nazareth movie. I believe the visualization helps them to understand what Jesus’s life  was like. It is a very moving portayal.

The sixth grade did great on their social Studies tests. Please encourage your child to keep on top of their notes and homework. We are on Ancient America and studying climographs this week as well.

The Book Fair begins Sunday and we will attend as a homeroom next Tuesday.

*** we are still in desperate need of Kleenex and Clorox Wipes

Have a great week!

March 12, 2012

I hope everyone had a good weekend and enjoyed the nice weather on Sunday for the parade. The weather should be great this week and Spring is upon us.

The fifth and sixth grade students will will attend Reconcilliation on Wednesday afternoon. The classes have been preparing for this during Lent. In Religion, we will finish up our lessons on Lent and Easter. They will be tested at the end of the week.

The Social Studies classes will finish up Chapter 10 on Arabia and surrounding areas. The test will be on Thursday. Next week, we begin our study of Ancient America.

Have a good week!

March 6, 2012

This week is hopefully quiet. The fifth grade is taking Terra Nova tests this week so the sixth grade is on quiet mode in the halls.

It has been difficult for all of us to hear the sad news about our former student, CPL Lowry. He and his family are certainly in our prayers.

In fifth grade we continue with Lent and Holy Week lessons. There will be a short quiz later in the week. Also, the students will be attending confession next Wednesday. We will spend time reviewing the prayers and also learn how to examine our conscience.

The Social Studies tests are being passed back today. For the most part, the classes did well. I have discussed the importance of keeping on track this last trimester of sixth grade. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, and I am sure we will have some sad faces. Unfortunately, grades went down for many students this trimester.

Enjoy the weekend and stay safe at the parade!

February 27, 2012

We just have a few more days in February and move into March. Hopefully, spring is on the way.

This week in sixth grade, we finish up the chapter on Ancient Rome. We will begin reviewing on Wednesday and Thursday and prepare for the test on Friday. Please make sure your child continues to study for tests and check assignment notebooks daily. We have had several slip-ups lately from many students who are not doing their assignments. Report cards will be sent home in a couple of weeks, and I don’t want any grades to suffer because of students not being prepared.

In fifth grade, we are focusing on Lent in preparation of Easter. Easter is the most important feast of the church year.We will have a quiz later in the week. We will also begin understanding the Stations of the Cross and pray them in Church. The children have been very reverent and mindful of this very holy season of the year. We will also begin watching excerpts from the film, Jesus of Nazareth, to help the children visualize what those times were like.

Have a wonderful week.

February 21,2012

I hope you all had an enjoyable 3 day weekend. It was good to get some rest and hopefully the flu bugs will be gone soon. The play at Evergreen High School was very enjoyable. The music, dancing and singing were terrific! Our fifth and sixth graders were very well behaved and a perfect audience.

In Religion this week, we will learn more about Lent and its’ meaning during these next 40 days. The students will have a Lenten Path calendar to fill in each day. Wednesday, we attend mass for Ash Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.

In Social Studies, we will have a quiz this week on lessons 1&2 of the chapter on Rome. Currently, we are studying Roman civilization, Julius Caesar, Cleopatra and Augustus. The material is quite interesting, but a lot of information to digest.

Have a good week!
